Description

This Overnight Creme Brulee French Toast is a decadent breakfast dish featuring thick slices of day-old French bread soaked in a rich custard mixture, baked to perfection over a buttery brown sugar glaze. Prepare it the night before for a hassle-free and indulgent start to your day.

Ingredients

Scale

Brown Sugar Glaze

  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons corn syrup

French Toast

  • 12 slices thickly sliced bread (day-old or stale, French bread recommended)
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 ½ cups half and half cream
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • dash of cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Make the Brown Sugar Glaze: In a small saucepan, melt the butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup over medium heat until smooth, stirring occasionally to combine the ingredients well.
  2. Prepare the Pan: Pour the warm brown sugar glaze mixture onto a large, greased jelly roll pan (18x13x1 inches) and spread evenly to cover the surface.
  3. Arrange the Bread: Place 12 slices of thickly sliced bread in a single layer over the glaze to cover the pan completely.
  4. Prepare the Custard Mixture: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, half and half cream, salt, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until fully combined and smooth.
  5. Soak the Bread: Spoon the custard mixture evenly over each slice of bread. Cover the pan tightly and refrigerate overnight to allow the bread to soak thoroughly.
  6. Bake the French Toast: Remove the pan from the refrigerator and bake uncovered at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes or until the top is set and golden.
  7. Serve: Remove the French toast from the pan and transfer to serving plates. Top with your favorite syrup, whipped cream, fresh fruit, powdered sugar, or any other toppings of choice.

Notes

  • Use day-old or stale French bread for best texture; fresh bread will become too soggy.
  • Feel free to substitute half and half with heavy cream or whole milk for a lighter option.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator and reheat gently in the oven or microwave.
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg or orange zest to the custard mixture for extra flavor.
  • Make sure the bread is fully soaked overnight for a custardy, soft interior.
