Ingredients
Scale
Baked Apples
- 2 lbs. apples
- 3 Tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- 1/8 tsp ground cloves
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Oat Topping
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup butter, room temperature
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350ºF to prepare for baking the apple crisp.
- Prepare Apples: Core and slice the apples into ¼-½ inch wide slices. Peel if preferred. Place the sliced apples in a large bowl.
- Season Apples: In a small bowl, mix together the sugar, flour, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. Sprinkle this spice mixture over the apples and drizzle the vanilla extract on top. Stir thoroughly to evenly coat the apple slices.
- Make Oat Topping: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Cut the butter into small chunks and use your hands to work it into the oat mixture until crumbly and slightly damp.
- Assemble Crisp: Evenly sprinkle the oat topping over the seasoned apples in the bowl.
- Bake: Transfer the apple and topping mixture into an oven-safe dish and bake for 45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Serve: Remove from oven and serve the apple crisp hot, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream on top.
Notes
- Choose tart apples like Granny Smith for a balanced sweet and tangy flavor.
- Peeling apples is optional depending on personal texture preference.
- Butter should be at room temperature to easily incorporate into the oat topping.
- For added texture, consider adding chopped nuts such as walnuts or pecans to the oat topping.
- Leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
