Description

Delight in these Brown Butter Dulce de Leche Rice Krispie Treats, featuring browned butter’s rich, nutty flavor combined with gooey dulce de leche and cinnamon sugar Rice Krispies for a decadent twist on a classic treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 5 Tablespoons Butter
  • ¼ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 10 Cups Mini Marshmallows, divided
  • 6 Cups Rice Krispies Cereal, cinnamon sugar flavored (or add ¼ cup cinnamon sugar if unavailable)
  • ½ teaspoon Sea Salt, fine grain
  • ½ Can Dulce de Leche

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pan: Spray a 9×9-inch pan with non-stick spray and line it with a foil or parchment paper sling. Spray again to ensure easy removal.
  2. Brown the Butter: Place a large pot on the stove over medium heat. Add butter and allow it to melt, stirring gently until it foams and small brown flecks appear, indicating browned butter. Remove from heat promptly to avoid burning.
  3. Melt Marshmallows: Add sea salt and 8 cups of mini marshmallows to the browned butter off heat. Stir until completely melted and smooth. If needed, return briefly to heat without burning.
  4. Add Vanilla: Stir in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
  5. Combine with Cereal: Measure rice krispies cereal into a large bowl. Pour melted marshmallow mixture over the cereal and mix thoroughly to coat.
  6. Add Remaining Marshmallows: While the mixture is still warm, fold in the remaining 2 cups of mini marshmallows evenly.
  7. Layer First Half: Lightly press about half of the rice krispies mixture into the prepared pan, flattening it evenly using a spoon coated lightly with butter to prevent sticking.
  8. Spread Dulce de Leche: Evenly spread the dulce de leche over the first layer of the rice krispies mixture.
  9. Top with Remaining Mixture: Add the remaining rice krispies mixture on top of the dulce de leche, pressing lightly and evenly to form the top layer.
  10. Set and Serve: Allow the treats to set at room temperature until completely cooled and firm, then cut into squares and serve.

Notes

  • Use cinnamon sugar flavored Rice Krispies for best results; if unavailable, stir in ¼ cup cinnamon sugar to plain Rice Krispies.
  • To brown butter, watch for foam and brown flecks; remove promptly to avoid burning.
  • Using a butter-coated spoon helps press the mixture into the pan without sticking to hands.
  • Store treats in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days or freeze for up to 6 weeks for longer storage.
