Description

Delightfully classic Amish Sugar Cookies that are buttery, soft, and perfect for any occasion. These cookies blend both granulated and powdered sugar for a tender crumb and are easy to make with simple pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale

Cookie Dough

  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper, setting them aside for later use.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugars: In the bowl of a standing mixer, beat together the softened butter, vegetable oil, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar until well combined and creamy.
  3. Add Eggs and Vanilla: Incorporate the eggs and vanilla extract into the mixture and beat for an additional 2 minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl to ensure everything is well mixed.
  4. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar.
  5. Mix Dry and Wet Ingredients: With the mixer running on low speed, gradually add the flour mixture a couple of spoonfuls at a time until the dough is evenly combined and smooth.
  6. Scoop and Arrange Cookies: Using a cookie dough scoop, drop spoonfuls of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them adequately.
  7. Bake Cookies: Bake in the preheated oven for 8 minutes or until the edges are just lightly golden brown on the bottom.
  8. Cool Cookies: Transfer the baked cookies to wire racks to cool completely before serving or storing.

Notes

  • Using parchment paper is optional but recommended for easier cleanup and to prevent sticking; cookies may spread slightly differently without it.
  • The cookie dough does not need chilling; you can bake immediately after mixing. However, chilling is optional if preferred.
  • Oven temperatures may vary, so start checking cookies at 7 minutes to prevent overbaking.
